Letter from Director

Dear Colleagues:

Masood

It is our great pleasure to invite you to join us in our new educational symposium entitled "Molecular Medicine: Applying Current and Emerging Technologies." This symposium will be held on March 27-30, 2008 at the Buena Vista Palace in the Walt Disney World Resort.

The objective of this symposium is to provide an overview of the current and emerging technologies that are changing the patterns of medical practice and moving us towards personalized medicine. As you are all aware, not only are we in the midst of a revolution in our molecular understanding of human disease; we also are well into a new era of applying these technologies into our clinical practice. Whether this era is termed "Molecular Medicine" or "Personalized Medicine," it is now an absolute requirement that physicians and biomedical scientists alike stay abreast of the breathtaking developments in molecular science. Moreover, we must equip ourselves with operational knowledge so as to keep up with the rapid pace of discovery that will surely influence how we practice medicine for the remainder of our professional careers.

This symposium focuses on the major disease areas where molecular medicine has the greatest impact: infectious disease, hematology/oncology, pharmacogenomics, metabolic disorders and genetics. National leaders will address the diagnostic and prognostic/predictive advances in each of these areas. In addition, attention also will be given to the economic and ethical issues of molecular medicine.

This symposium is designed to serve a diverse audience, which includes but is not limited to pathologists, medical directors of anatomic and clinical laboratories, laboratory administrators, researchers, physicians and residents/fellows in training who are interested in integrating new molecular technologies in their research and clinical practice.

We should also note that this Florida meeting is scheduled at precisely the time that respite from the northerly blasts of winter is most needed: March. I invite you all to bask in the most congenial ambiance of central Florida at this time of year.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
